15 years ago, ARM CEMENT LTD (formerly Athi River Mining Ltd.), a leading mineral extraction and processing company in Kenya ventured into cement manufacturing. Established in 1974 and originally a family run business under the stewardship of H.J. Paunrana, ARM is today a publicly held company and one of the largest cement manufacturers in the region. This is set to increase by the end of 2012, following completion of two new plants in Tanzania: an integrated cement plant in Tanga that will have a cement capacity based on our own clinker production of 1, 500,000 tpa and a grinding plant in Dar es Salaam. Combined Rhino Cement capacity will therefore increase further to 3.25 m tpa.

We Operate Modern Laboratories:
An in-house ultra modern and well equipped laboratory available at both Kaloleni and Athi River plants controls product quality along the process line. These laboratories are equipped with a modern panalytical X-ray Fluoroscopy (XRF) analyzer machine that allows for instantaneous analysis of cement. Stringent control of the process at every step of production ensures that the final clinker and cement meets the required production specifications.
We Afford Lower Production Costs:
We are constantly innovating and seeking ways to manufacture cement more efficiently. The, significant investment put into the construction of a state of the art integrated plant over the years has enabled us to do this without compromising on quality. This has resulted in reduced energy consumption per tonne of cement, which has led to lower production costs. Manufacture of our own clinker further reduces overall cost of cement manufacture.
The main raw materials used in the manufacture of cement are limestone, sand, shale, clay, and iron ore. Our Kaloleni factory is located close to a rich source of very high purity limestone allowing for prospecting of deposits.
STEP 1 Extraction
Limestone or calcium carbonate is mined on site while the other minor materials may be mined either on site or in nearby quarries. It is then transported to the Rhino Cement plant where it is stored with other materials. Consistent quality checks during extraction are carried out to ensure quality of raw materials.
STEP 2: Blasting:
After the removal of overburden, the rock is blasted using the latest technology. Blasting produces materials in a wide range of sizes from approximately 1.5 meters in diameter to small particles of less than a few millimetres in diameter. After blasting, samples are once again analyzed following which the rock is loaded into trucks and transported to the crusher.
STEP 3: Crushing
At the crusher a multistage process comprising a series of crushers and screens reduces the limestone rocks to stone of less than 25 mm in diameter. Every hour, samples are tested for Total Carbonates (TC), moisture and lime saturation factor (LSF) (also referred to as full capable analysis). Crushed rock is then carefully stored in stockpiles at the plant until required. Systematic sampling and laboratory testing occurs round the clock.
STEP: 4 Raw Milling
At this stage, carefully measured quantities of the various raw materials are fed via raw mill feed silos to mills where steel balls grind the material to fine powder (usually less than 75 microns) called raw meal. This is a standard raw mix of limestone, shale and iron ore. Qualified quality control ensures a good raw mix design. This raw mix is then sucked into a homo silo (homogenous silo) by use of aeration. This homo silo is used to store the meal where it is blended thoroughly to ensure standard deviations are minimal and that the kiln feed is uniform; a prerequisite for efficient functioning of the kiln and for good quality clinker.
STEP 5: Modern Pyroprocessing
After grinding & blending, the raw materials are heated to around 1500C in the suspension pre-heater tower (PH)This is the most critical stage of the entire cement manufacturing process that applies modern process control technology and it takes place in the pre-calciner rotary kiln. It is also the stage where high pure flammable coal (high calorific value coal) is used to burn the raw mix to produce clinker. Raw meal is fed into one end of the kiln and pulverised coal is burnt at the other end. The raw meal slowly flows down the inclined kiln towards the heat and reaches a temperature of about 1 450 Â°C in the burning zone where a process called clinkering occurs.
ARM is one of the few cement companies that manufactures its own premium quality clinker which has the highest C3S, the highest pure gypsum and tri-calcium silicate and the least magnesium oxide (MGO). Good quality clinker is produced in a modern closed circuit system with a classifier system (high efficiency) that assures better particles size distribution (PSD) and fineness. The hot clinker is then passed through a cooling system & the cooled clinker is taken away by conveyors to the clinker storage silos. Gas from the kiln is cleaned by electrostatic precipitators prior to discharge into the atmosphere.
Clinker and small amounts of Pozzolana and Gypsum are then finely ground into cement by a process called ball milling. After which they are transferred to the packing plant where the cement is packed in bags ready for dispatch
The Rhino Cement Division is driven by the economic, infrastructure and developmental goals of the nation. We have achieved tremendous growth since inception and are keen on implementing a growth strategy whose focus lies on supporting Kenya’s Vision 2030 with aggressive and increased production capacity. The division is set to witness a threefold growth with our two newest plants under construction in Tanga and Dar es Salaam Tanzania that are slated to have a combined capacity of 2.25M tpa. This will increase our overall cement capacity to 3.25Mtpa.
Currently, Rhino Cement is manufactured at our Kaloleni plant in Mombasa as well as at our new Athi River plant. We produce Pozzolanic Portland Cement (PPC) of 32.5 grade and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) of 42.5 grade. OPC is used in the construction of buildings, bridges, dams and ports.
Both cement types are manufactured to Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the European Norms (EN. 179) specifications as required by the building and construction industry. In 2001 and 2004 respectively, our Kaloleni plant received the ISO 9000 certificate for Quality and the ISO 14001 certificate for Environmental Management systems.
We are indeed proud to be the first cement manufacturing company in Kenya to receive the ISO 9000 certification.
